In the heart of rural Lithuania, amidst the fields and tranquility of the small village of Rukai, there's a tree that has become a European symbol. The Laukiai oak, an almost 400-year-old specimen, has just won the title of "European Tree of the Year 2026", in one of the most closely watched and hotly contested editions of the continental competition dedicated to Europe's best-loved trees.
This isn't just a botanical competition. Behind this victory lies a story of collective memory, belonging and cultural renaissance. Not so long ago, this oak tree was almost forgotten, known only to the locals. Then the situation changed: the local community decided to rehabilitate the area around this great tree, organizing events, celebrations and initiatives that turned it into a veritable landmark of identity.
Tight competition with over 200,000 participants
The 2026 edition of the prize recorded some impressive figures. The official competition website exceeded 1.5 million visits, while over 200,000 people from all over Europe took part in the voting.
This year, the rules were modified with the introduction of a new "Tree Points" system, designed to make the competition more balanced and avoid discrepancies linked to the size of the voting countries' populations. A choice that kept the suspense on the standings until the very last moments.
Behind the Lithuanian oak rose the picturesque 150-year-old Slovakian wild apple tree and the emblematic Polish tilted elm, famous for its trunk bending over the water like a natural sculpture.
A tree that has become a symbol of community and resistance
The Laukiai oak has conquered Europe not only because of its imposing stature. What really stands out is its human and symbolic value. Entire generations have intertwined around its branches: today, the sixth generation of the Laukiai family is growing up alongside this green giant.
In autumn, its golden foliage transforms the landscape into a spectacular backdrop. But it's above all its ability to bring people together that has made the difference. Concerts, traditional costumes, public gatherings and popular festivals have given new life to a place that was in danger of being relegated to oblivion.
Europe rediscovers its monumental trees
Over the years, the "European Tree of the Year" award has become much more than just an environmental competition. It's a way of telling the story of the deep bond between people and nature, by highlighting trees that are home to stories, local identities and historical memory. In an age dominated by speed and constant change, the Laukiai oak stands out as the perfect symbol of what stands the test of time: deep roots, community and shared memory.
