28-year-old crosses the Atlantic by himself in a rowboat: Lorenzo Barone's epic feat

  • Jan 27, 2026 06:00

Lorenzo Barone, 28, from San Gemini in the province of Terni, completed an extraordinary challenge: crossing the Atlantic Ocean by himself in a rowboat, with no sail and no motor. The trip ended on the night of January 24-25, when Barone reached the coast near Kourou in French Guiana after setting off from the shores of Mauritania on December 19 last year.

Dust - The Way of the Sand

The crossing is part of the project 'Dust - The Way of the Sand,' conceived by Barone himself, which aims to document the natural trajectory of Sahara dust crossing the Atlantic Ocean to feed the Amazon. In addition to its sporting and technical value, the adventure also has a scientific and ecological meaning, and tells of the connection between Africa and South America through an extreme, conscious journey.

A life dedicated to extreme challenges

Lorenzo Barone is no stranger to extraordinary challenges. To date, he has covered more than 100,000 kilometers in more than 60 countries, crossing areas that are both climatically and politically hostile. By moving on foot, by bicycle or by sea, he has demonstrated physical and mental resilience beyond compare. Among his most famous ventures is a bicycle ride from Cape Agulhas in South Africa to Cape Dezhnyov in Russia, along the longest land route in the world.

Between 2020 and 2021, Barone trekked through the Siberian pole of cold in the harshest winter months, reaching the northernmost road on earth. These often solitary experiences honed his adaptability and ability to cope with extreme conditions, preparing him for challenges such as crossing the Atlantic by rowboat.

Beyond the physical frontier: a message about the connection between humans and the environment

Baroness Atlantic crossing is not only a personal record, but also a message about the bond between humans and the environment, about the importance of knowing and documenting global natural phenomena. With 'Dust - The Way of the Sand', Baroness unites adventure sports, research and storytelling, showing how passion for travel can become a tool for understanding the world better.
