France: at 30, Lazare could become the world's oldest dog

In the mountains of Haute-Savoie, France, lives a dog who could well upset our knowledge of canine longevity. His name is Lazare, he's a Continental Miniature Spaniel, and according to official documents he was born on December 4, 1995. If this date were confirmed without reservation, he would have passed the 30-year mark, a milestone considered virtually unattainable for his species.

The story caught the attention of the Société Protectrice des Animaux (SPA), which launched checks and applied to Guinness World Records, paving the way for a new world record.

A fragile dog with surprising longevity

Lazare doesn't look like an "extraordinary" animal in the traditional sense. His condition reflects a very advanced age. The dog suffers from arthritis, has impaired vision and hearing, and possesses a distinctive feature that makes him instantly recognizable: a constantly protruding tongue. Despite this complex clinical picture, he continues to live, adapting to an old age that has never totally stopped him. It is precisely this resilience that makes his case so studied and commented on.

Official checks and confirmation of his date of birth

His age was verified in several stages. Both his microchip and the Livre des Origines Français (LOF), the official register of pedigree dogs, show the same date of birth: December 4, 1995. We double-checked. There can be no doubt. Lazare is about to celebrate his 31st birthday", explained Anne-Sophie Moyon, manager of the Annecy Marlioz shelter, where the dog was taken in after the death of his previous owner.

A new life after the loss of his first owner

After the death of his first owner, Lazare found a new home thanks to 29-year-old Ophélie Boudol, who adopted him from the shelter. When she discovered his age, she was incredulous, realizing that she herself was younger than he was. For her, however, the question of record remains secondary. Today, Lazare lives surrounded by attention and care, far from statistical considerations. Ophélie says that she adopted him out of love for animals, and that a strong bond was forged immediately.She felt it was essential that he should not end his life in a shelter, but in a home filled with love.
