Adopting a dog: things you need to know before choosing the perfect companion

A faithful four-legged friend can be invaluable and can brighten even the darkest days, always by your side, for better or worse. However, adoption also requires thorough awareness and preparation: before welcoming a dog into your life, it's crucial to consider some important aspects to ensure a successful adoption.

The choice of name is important for the dog

The choice of a name is usually the first aspect that people who plan to adopt a dog or have just done so begin to fantasize about: hours and hours are spent on hypotheses about what name would best suit its character and appearance. This phase is considered so important that there are even name generators, a useful tool for those who are in a creative slump or just need some inspiration or advice, as well as a very entertaining way to get to know your new companion.

However, we would like to stress that there are much more important practical matters to consider before making such an important choice. After all, anyone who truly loves animals knows that you should not underestimate their welfare and, above all, be prepared to make compromises. A conscious choice begins precisely with the ability to clearly analyze what the needs of the dog we are going to adopt are and whether we are able to meet them.

Time

A fundamental aspect is certainly time. A dog is a social being that requires a significant amount of care and attention. This not only means indispensable daily walks, but also upbringing, grooming, regular visits to the vet and, above all, playing, which is especially important for a puppy, as well as during adulthood. What's for more, whether it's a puppy or an adult dog, you can never leave him home alone for excessive periods of time, as he or she will be exposed to emotional stress that often leads to separation anxiety and destructive behavior.

And space

Having analyzed the time aspect, let's look at what a dog needs from the perspective of space. Let's start by saying that with regards to time, there's a general consensus for different dog breeds, while with regards to space, there's more specific requirements which are relevant to the size of the animal, and thus the breed. Large dogs often need to expend a much greater amount of energy than small or even medium-sized dogs: this mainly translates to the need for longer outdoor walks. It's therefore strongly discouraged to adopt medium to large dogs if you live in a small apartment, or in a small house without adequate outdoor space. For those who  choose small or medium-sized animals, although an outdoor space would certainly be the best option, less extensive environments without green space can also be considered.
